Project: Holding tank
My initial inspection of the boat revealed that the toilet's Flush/Dry dial was broken off, rendering the toilet unuseable. The bigger issue, however, was that there was no holding tank.
Fixing the toilet was easy. I bought replacement parts and an overhaul kit directly from Raritan, pulled the toilet from the boat, and quickly got it in "new" condition.
Adding the holding tank was one of the last jobs I did, so I had lots of time to think about a solution. I decided to go with a gravity-drain system. The advantage of going route is that draining the tank is very easy -- it's just a matter of opening the seacock. Pumping out from the deck is an easy matter, too.
For this system, I needed a location close to the toilet that was high enough for the bottom of the tank to be above the water line, so I had to go with the hanging locker behind the toilet.
I purchased a 7-gallon holding tank online. I could have gone bigger, but I wanted to make sure that the tank could fit through the cabinet door, and I wanted to keep some open space in the locker.
I painted the upper section of the locker with an oil-based paint and made a platform out of marine plywood.
I had to cut an opening in order to install a fitting at the bottom of the tank. The tank is held secure with nylon webbing.
Job is done! |
